Perfect Movement
/Perfection isn't really real. Or, if it is, it's a whole lot messier than we think it is. True perfection, perhaps, is the moment when we realize that there is beauty in our imperfect world - there's beauty everywhere, really: In the kitchen that's messy because it's been cooked in. In the bed that needs to be made because it gave you a night's rest. In the sadness we feel when we say goodbye to people and places we love - our sadness means that we are full of love, and that is perfect.
Our common definition of 'perfection', however, doesn't often encompass humanity like this. Instead, we're tricked into thinking that until things are exactly as they should be, or without flaw of any kind, we cannot move forward. Until we 'get it just right', we're paralyzed with 'not yet' and 'what if'.
Here's the thing: If you're paralyzed, you're not moving anywhere. Life, in a sense, has become stagnant.
One of my words for 2018 is 'Movement'. For me, this word is unlocking that straightjacket of perfection. Every time I find myself stalling or over-analyzing or getting distracted by all the little things I 'could' fix, I remember this word. Movement. Just move forward. Just put your ideas into action. Just try.
Will we make mistakes? Of course. But I would rather try and mess up than stay in paralysis. Life is passing us by.
So, writer, my question this week for you is this: What endeavors are you stalling on because you think you need to get them 'perfect'? What do you want to try? What ideas do you want to share with the world? What habit are you longing to change, once and for all? Why not, today, this moment, simply begin? What would happen? What will happen if you stay still, where you are?
