On Gratitude (a poem).

On Gratitude (a poem).

Things I am grateful for:

The green screen of leaves

on the weeping birch.

The napping baby.

The purple ink

on the blank page.

The tea that is forthcoming.

The shower of pink blossoms

snow in May.

Pink blossoms inside, too,

in the vase your aunt made

from brown clay

many years ago.

How do these things find their way

to you?

The home with the ancient trees

that only belong to themselves.

The kettle full of clean water.

The sleeping child who asks you

daily

to have only humility

and gratitude.

Your Lane.

When I moved home after 10 years away

I found solace at a school.

Not inside a classroom

like the one whose walls I had once called mine

but outside under the sky.

An asphalt track

welcomed my feet.

Under heat, turning brown.

Under clouds, turning cold.

Under snow

Under rain

And one perfect Wednesday evening,

under a sunset so pure,

it could only be God saying, Welcome.

I was not alone.

As I walked in my lane, I watched a young man

kicking field goals.

One perfect arc after another.

He was in his prime, perhaps.

And perhaps life might not ever be

as perfect as it was this cold, clear evening

ever again.

Would he remember?

I would.

When doubt came knocking

when life was simply boxing in the dark

no target

there would remain

a track

nine lanes

a perfect arc

and someone’s voice saying

Welcome.

Thanks for reading.

Hello! My name is Beth and I'm a full-time high school English teacher living in beautiful western Montana. I'm also a writer. Before turning to teaching, I earned an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Montana. A few years of adjuncting at small two-year colleges helped me realize how much I love teaching, so I returned to school for a Masters of Education. There, I was lucky enough to meet my wonderful husband. Together, we head off to our classrooms (at the same school, which is pretty great) each morning. Our town is a small one, but also an incredibly beautiful one. I've lived in Montana all my life and feel lucky to know exactly where I want to live. While starting my teaching career, I also published my first novel, The Actor, with Riverbend Publishing (a Montana publisher). When I make time, I'm working on a few other new novels and creating content here!

Thanks for visiting this space; I hope that some of what I offer will provide insight, beauty, and inspiration to your life.
